Configuring your Windows-based PocketPC
This document shows you how to configure your PocketPC / Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 handheld device to connect to CoreComm Internet.

Before we begin, you should have your modem hardware connected (if it's not built into the device), and the PocketPC should be on AC Adapter power.  The batteries will likely drain rather quickly if they must power both a modem and Internet applications as well.

Step One
Turn on your PocketPC.  You might be greeted with the Today screen.  Using the provided stylus, tap on the Start button and select Settings.

Step Two
From the Settings screen, tap on the Connections tab.

Step Three
From the Connections tab, tap on the Modem icon.  This will take you into the Modem Connections screen.

Step Four
Tap on New Connection (shown here) to create a new connection.

Step Five
From here, you'll need to enter a name for the connection and select the modem you'd like to use from the list.

Here, we enter CoreComm Internet for the connection name.  You can select the modem you'll be using from the list.

When finished, click on the Advanced button.

Step Six
In the Advanced settings, you'll land on the Port Settings tab.

The default options are shown below and should be left alone:

After you've reviewed these settings, skip to the Name Servers tab.

Step Seven
Once on the Name Servers tab, you'll need to enter our DNS server settings.

Select Use specific server address, and enter in our DNS numbers as shown below.  Leave the WINS numbers as zeroes.

DNS:209.153.128.4
Alt DNS:169.207.1.3

Once you have verified these settings, click OK in the upper-right hand corner of the display.  Then, when you're back at the screen where we entered in "CoreComm Internet", click Next.

Step Eight
From this screen, you can enter the area code and number of the CoreComm PoP (dial-up number) that's closest to you.  Here, we use the downtown Chicago number as an example.

When finished, click Next.

Step Nine
Now, you'll be presented with a few calling options.  The default settings are shown below, and should be used under most circumstances.

If you're using a modem connected to a cellular telephone, consult that particular modem's instructions on how to configure this screen.  It's likely left alone, but special instructions might apply.

Click Finish to save this dial-up entry.

Step Ten
You should now see the connection we just created in the modem connections list.  Before we attempt to connect, we should make sure the dialing properties are properly entered.

Tap on the Dialing tab at the bottom of the window.

Step Eleven
You're going to want to be sure that all your dialing properties are correct so the number is dialed properly.

This is where we specify whether or not we need to disable call waiting so the connection isn't interrupted, and whether we need to dial a number first to access an outside line (like in a hotel where you must dial 9 first).

Select the existing location you'd like to use, or create a fresh one by clicking New

In this example, we're using the default one for "Work".  Microsoft designed this one to work for most workplaces.  Here's what we need to check here:

Area Code
Check to see that the area code that you're dialing from as entered is correct (since we're in downtown Chicago, we're using 312 as the area code here).

Disable Call Waiting
If you have call waiting on the line you're going to be using, it might be a good idea to disable it.  You can typically do this by dialing *70 on a normal phone line to do this.  If you do not have call waiting, leave it blank.

Tip: If you're going to be connecting from more places than home or work, it's good practice to create a new dialing "location" for each location you'll be connecting from, so you can easily retrieve the necessary dialing settings each time you go from one place to the next.

To be sure all of the methods of dialing out are correct, click on the Dialing Patterns button to check these specifications.

If you need to dial 9 for an outside line, this is what the Dialing Patterns screen should look like:

If you don't need to dial anything for an outside line, the Dialing Patterns screen should look like this:

When finished with these settings, click OK to get back to the Modem Connections screen.  Then, click OK again.

Step Twelve
Now, we're ready to connect!  Simply tap Start, then Programs, and then on the Connections folder.  From there, tap on the CoreComm Internet icon.

Then, simply enter in your username, your password, and click Connect.  You're all set to go!

When you're finished online, you can come back to the Connections folder to disconnect by tapping on the connection icon.
